The Great Hall of the People is the meeting place of the National People’s Congress of China and the office of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress. Completed in 1959, it is an important place for the Party, the State, and various people’s organizations of the People’s Republic of China to hold political activities.
The Great Hall of the People is located on the west side of Tian’anmen Square, facing east. The facade of the Great Hall is composed of three parts: the base, the colonnaded main structure, and the roof, all adorned with traditional Chinese architectural patterns. The gateway of the main entrance on the east facade features 12 light-gray marble columns on red marble bases. In reference to traditional Chinese design, the spacing between the columns progressively narrows from the center. Around the perimeter of the hall are 134 columns, each with a diameter of 2 meters, forming a colonnade in the classical Western architectural style. The Great Hall of the People is a long rectangle from north to south, underscoring the open and far-reaching spatial effect of Beijing Central Axis.
