Like the Bell Tower, the Drum Tower was also a time-keeping facility during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The sound of the drums told the hours to control the timing of opening and closing the city gates and neighborhood entrances in order to effectively manage urban life.
The Drum Tower is a five-bay-wide structure covered with a three-layered, double-eave gable-and-hip roof of gray tiles, with green glazed tiles on the ridges and eave edges. Inside the existing tower is a huge drum and drum beating performances are presented on a regular basis.
