The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall was built in 1977 to commemorate Chairman Mao as the core of the first generation of China’s revolutionary leaders. The building has several halls for the public to hold commemorative activities and honor the spirit and great achievements of the veteran Chinese leader.
The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall sits at the southern end of the Tian’anmen Square, facing the Monument to the People’s Heroes. It consists of three parts: the base, a colonnaded body, and the roof. Square-shaped, double-tiered, and made from red granite, the base is encircled with a white-marble balustrade decorated with evergreen patterns. There are 44 square granite pillars surrounding the outer corridor of the building, and the spacing of the pillars decreases from the center to both ends, which reflects the distinctive architectural style of ancient China. The memorial hall is covered with a double-eave flat roof of brown-yellow glazed plates, with the eaves adorned with patterns of sunflowers in relief. It is decorated with many traditional Chinese patterns, echoing the surrounding atmosphere of Tian’anmen Square.
